Rescue Paramedic Training and Appointment

Expressions of interest are sought from suitable applicants to be placed on an eligibility list for 18 months for ongoing Rescue Paramedic training vacancies.

  • Comprehensive training by NSW Ambulance.     
  • A dedicated two (2) year consolidation period to refine skills.
  • Permanent employment as a Rescue Paramedic.
  • Working under the Paramedic and Control Centre Officers (State) Award.

The next Rescue Training Course commencement date is tentatively scheduled for 5 February 2024.

About this role

Rescue operational environments are complex and require a high level of skill, knowledge, flexibility and coordination to deliver the service safely and effectively. Rescue Paramedics are part of a multidisciplinary team working collaboratively to deliver advanced patient access, critical care and extrication. 

The Rescue Paramedic is required to undertake the full duties of the position as defined in the Paramedic and Control Centre Officers (State) Award.

What you'll be doing

The position holder undertakes Rescue Paramedic duties. 

The position holder undertakes paramedic duties on a daily basis in support of NSW Ambulance (Ambulance) Operations. In addition to paramedic duties, Rescue Paramedics are an available resource for Ambulance Control Centres to task to incidents that require rescue skills for patients that are injured and/or ill. In addition to the support provided to Ambulance Operations, Rescue Paramedics provide specialist services and paramedical support to Government agencies intrastate, interstate and internationally i.e., NSW Police Force, Fire & Rescue NSW, NSW Rural Fire Service and Commonwealth agencies.

Where you'll be working

Successful applicants will be permanently appointed to a Rescue location nominated by NSW Ambulance:

  • Cowra Paramedic
  • Tamworth City Paramedic / Intensive Care Paramedic
  • Wagga Wagga Paramedic / Intensive Care Paramedic
  • Singleton Paramedic
  • Rutherford Paramedic / Intensive Care Paramedic 
  • Bomaderry Paramedic / Intensive Care Paramedic.

Training - eight (8) week didactic block at State Operations Centre, Homebush (or other location to be advised). 

Consolidation period - two (2) years, following successful completion of the didactic block (from first day on-road). This time will allow you to consolidate your knowledge, participate in peer-to-peer learning, enhance on-road skills, be supported during complex cases, dedicated time for rescue skills practice and allow the Organisation to have the right people, right place, right time.

About you

  • A good understanding of contemporary computer systems, including those specific to the paramedic work environment.

  • Capability of making and supporting high level clinical decisions.
  • Confidence in varied, complex environments.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high pressure, stressful situations.
  • An ability to act quickly to alleviate patient, family, and bystander stress.

To be eligible to apply, you must:

  • Be a current NSW Ambulance employee who has completed all mandatory and relevant training and work experience, as determined by NSW Ambulance, to be credentialed to a minimum clinical level of P1 Paramedic.
  • Be able to demonstrate two (2) years’ full-time equivalency experience with NSW Ambulance at the P1 Paramedic level, prior to the closing date of applications,
  • Meet and maintain the minimum level of physical fitness required for the role.
  • Be comfortable working at heights, wide open and confined spaces, and varying environmental conditions.
  • Hold and maintain an Australian Medium Rigid (MR) Driver’s Licence prior to commencing an allocated Rescue Training Course.
  • Be willing to undertake, in water, flood rescue training.
  • Undertake and maintain additional vaccinations periodically to ensure physical / medical suitability for the rescue capability.

Applicant testing and offer process

Applicants progressing past the cull phase, will proceed to testing. Testing comprises of:

  1. Special Operations physical, mechanical reasoning and aptitude assessments.
  2. Panel Interview.
  3. A clinical based scenario.
  4. A pre-employment medical assessment.

Successful applicants will be placed on an eligibility list, ranked in meritorious order. This list will be used to fill rescue training opportunities arising for up to 18 months. Training and posting opportunities will be subject to existing vacancies and demand. Successful applicants placed on the eligibility list and offered a course position more than six (6) months after their physical fitness assessment may be required to repeat the assessment.
