The main role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist - Grade 2 - Hand Nursing is to offer clinical nursing leadership in Hand Surgery at Sydney Hospital and Sydney Eye Hospital, aiming for optimal outcomes in treating patients with hand conditions, trauma, and injuries. This position collaborates with NUM 2 West/Hand Clinic, CNC Hands Hand Therapy Dept., and Medical and Allied Health staff, reporting directly to the NUM 2 West/Hand Clinic.
In consultation with the NUM, the Clinical Nurse Specialist - Grade 2 is responsible for:
- Demonstrating clinical expertise in hand conditions and hand surgery.
- Managing the Outpatient Hand Clinic operationally, including referral management, the coordination of patient triaging and patient flow.
- Communicating with patients and Hand Clinic staff about patient flow, wait times, and escalating extended wait times to the NUM.
- Implementing action plans to oversee patient care and coordination within the Hand Clinic.
- Evaluating and reviewing the effectiveness of strategies employed for hand patient management.
- Providing staff education and assessment, collaborating with Surgical Clinical Nurse Educator, CNC Hands, Clinical Nurse Specialists, and NUM to identify gaps within education and working together to deliver the educational support required within the Hand Clinic.
- Serving as a role model and leader for nursing staff in providing expert care.
- Acting as a resource person for staff providing care to patients with hand conditions.
- Communicating changes or updates in patient status regarding Hand trauma bookings with the Day Procedure Unit, Operating Theatres, and/or Patient Flow Coordinator in consultation with the Hand Medical team.

Selection Criteria
- Current registration with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia (AHPRA) and current NSW Driver's License (if required by service).
- Relevant Post graduate qualifications in Wound Care, Plastic or Orthopaedic surgery clinical area, and at least 3 years recent experience working, or such other qualifications or equivalent experience deemed appropriate.
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex clinical care and service delivery issues and problem solve through the development and use of clinical management plans.
- Demonstrated ability to exercise extended autonomy of decision making while working as part of a multidisciplinary team and apply professional and ethical boundaries when dealing with complex situations.
- Demonstrated skills in the development & facilitation of patient and carer education [and staff as required]
- Demonstrated high level written and verbal communication, interpersonal skills, and the ability to identify key messages, issues and concerns when communicating with others.
- Detailed knowledge and understanding of harm minimisation and evidence of leadership in safety and quality innovation.
- Demonstrated competence in the use of health-related information technology
