The Role

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Level 3 Speech Pathologist join our dedicated team in a permanent part-time role (20 hours/week) within the inpatient Aged Care team at St George Hospital.
This position is part of the Aged Care team in the newly established purpose built Behavioural Support Unit (BSU) located in the modern Kensington Street Building that is due to open in March 2026. The BSU provides evidence-based clinical and behavioural support for patients with dementia, delirium, and other age-related cognitive conditions.
The Behavioural Support Unit is dedicated to supporting older people living with dementia, delirium, and other age-related cognitive conditions. Our team delivers tailored, evidence-based care that promotes comfort, independence, and quality of life. The purpose of the Behaviour Support Unit is to stabilise behaviour and safely facilitate the transition of care to an appropriate discharge destination.
The Speech Pathology Department at St George Hospital is a supportive team focused on person-centered, compassionate care. We strive to provide consistent high quality speech pathology services across the campus. Our department consists of 18 speech pathologists and support staff, and we work across a variety of inpatient and outpatient services. Clinically we provide services to aged care, surgical, ICU/trauma, general medicine, neurology, rehabilitation, palliative care, head and neck oncology, and paediatric feeding streams. This role includes responsibilities for supervision, quality improvement initiatives, education delivery to other health care professionals and the teaching of students on clinical placement. Selection Criteria
- Qualifications in accordance with Schedule C of the NSW Health Service Health Professionals (State) Award and eligibility for membership for Speech Pathology Australia
- Extensive post-graduate experience in dysphagia and communication assessment and management in an Aged Care caseload
- Excellent negotiation, decision making and advocacy skills including the ability to interact constructively and collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders, throughout all organisational levels
- Ability to provide in-depth advice and education to enhance service delivery and to guide and support others in providing service excellence, with the capacity to provide clinical supervision to other staff
- Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and to apply advanced reasoning skills and independent professional judgement when dealing with situations of a novel, complex or critical nature
- Ability to initiate, lead, complete and share quality improvement initiatives and service evaluation processes and lead ongoing quality improvement activities with other staff
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing clinical and professional learning
- Demonstrated commitment to a positive workplace culture.
