What you'll be doing
The NSW Public Health System Nurse' & Midwives' (State) Award states that the Nurse/ Midwifery Unit Manager is 'the registered nurse in charge of a ward or unit or group of wards or units in a public hospital or health service or public health organisation' and is responsible for the coordination of patient services, unit management and staff management.
Terms used and their meaning:
- The term patient also refers to client, consumers, women and babies depending on the clinical context.
- The term health care team also refers to the multidisciplinary team and includes the nursing/midwifery team within the clinical context.
- The term ward or unit also refers to a service, clinic or centre for which the Nurse/Midwifery Unit Manager is the manager and is responsible and accountable.
- The way in which the purpose is expressed or demonstrated will be dependent on the experience of the Nurse/ Midwifery Unit Manager, the clinical context and the geographic location of work. As the manager of the unit the purpose of the Nurse/ Midwifery Unit Manager role is to;
- Lead, direct and coordinate patient care, at the ward/unit level.
- Ensure the practice of nursing/midwifery is safe and efficient, while maintaining standards of care.
- Manage the business/management processes of the ward/unit.

- Registered Nurse with a current licence to practice from the Australian Health Practitioners Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
- Relevant tertiary qualifications or working towards the same; or alternatively relevant work experience or combination of qualification and work experience.
- Demonstrated experience in the relevant specialty of the ward/unit.
- Demonstrated skills in leadership and management within the healthcare setting.
- Demonstrated ability to evaluate clinical services and manage change.
- Proven ability to create and maintain a positive workplace culture and articulate and achieve a vision for nursing/maternity services.
- Demonstrated computer literacy and confidence in using Microsoft and health care information systems.
