The Role
The vision for midwifery at the Royal Hospital for Women (RHW) is to provide exceptional, evidence-based care that empowers women and birthing people. The Registered Midwife, Midwifery Group Practice (MGP) is responsible for delivering high-quality, individualised, woman-centred care to a caseload of women or birthing persons within a continuity of care model. This includes assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation of care in collaboration with the woman or birthing person, the partner or support person, and the multidisciplinary healthcare team across the continuum of pregnancy, labour, birth, and the postnatal period.
This role involves clinical decision-making aligned to the ACM Guidelines of Consultation and Referral while facilitating and fostering ongoing nurturing relationships and collaborating with midwives within the MGP team. The MGP Midwife develops strong partnerships with multidisciplinary teams including Child and Family Health Services. The midwife works with the responsibility, and accountability for achieving high-quality outcomes and ensuring the safety of their caseload in alignment with NSW, SESLHD, and RHW clinical business rules.
The MGP Midwife is expected to maintain personal and professional development through participation in training, education activities, clinical supervision, and performance reviews to continuously improve the level and quality of care provided. They are also expected to share knowledge and support other staff including midwifery students and new-graduate midwives.
The position will involve participating and negotiating on call rosters within the MGP team including weekend “on-call” shifts and associated travel within SESLHD. Mileage reimbursement is applicable to this position through NSW Policy. Remuneration aligns with the Pilot Model Annualised Salary Agreement for Midwifery Group Practices (IB2014-50) within the hospital.

Selection Criteria:
- Current registration as a Registered Midwife with the Nursing & Midwifery Board of Australia (AHPRA) and agreement to participate in the Pilot Model Annualised Salary Agreement for Midwifery Group Practices.
- Current NSW Drivers Licence.
- Demonstrated high level written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills and the ability to identify key messages, issues and concerns when communicating with others and proven ability to use health information systems.
- Demonstrates an understanding and knowledge of continuity of care based on primary maternity care principles, and a woman centered philosophy of childbirth as a transformative part of families lives.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and as part of a multi-disciplinary team, engaging with families and relevant key stakeholders, applying professional and ethical boundaries and escalating appropriately when dealing with complex situations.
- Detailed knowledge and understanding of risk management, safety and quality principles and the role of the Registered Midwife in applying these principles within the maternity services setting.
- Demonstrates accountability, competence, proficiency, and responsibility for own midwifery practice related to lactation and infant feeding consistent with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council competency standards for midwives, NSW Health Breastfeeding Policy and the BFHI Principles.
