Applications are invited from suitably qualified medical practitioners for the above position in the Western Sydney Local Health District (WSLHD).
The Western Sydney Local Health District Voluntary Assisted Dying Service is set up to provide every aspect of the legislated voluntary assisted dying process for people in WSLHD. The authorised practitioners in the WSLHD Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD) Service as part of the WSLHD VAD team in conjunction with nurse coordinators and the Medical Lead. Applicants are expected to act as coordinating, consulting, and administering practitioners.
Successful applicants will:
- provide high quality medical care to patients.
- ensure a high standard of professional performance acting as VAD coordinating, consulting, and administering practitioners under the NSW Voluntary Assisted Dying Act (2022), and
- contribute to the program so that clinicians, services and the public are well-served, and all aspects of the legislation are complied with.
- Be willing to travel across WSLHD to provide aspects of VAD services to patients.
- Have practised in the medical profession for at least 10 years.
Applicants must have Australian Fellowship/Specialist Registration at time of applying and 10 years’ experience as a medical practitioner
Essential Requirements for Appointment
1. Possess registration with the Medical Board of Australia and credentialled as an Authorised Voluntary Assisted Dying Practitioner in NSW. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency.
2. Sound clinical knowledge in end-of-life care demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position
3. Sound knowledge of the complex legal, medical, social, and psychological environment in which Voluntary Assisted Dying occupies in NSW Health
4. Demonstrated clinical ability to carry out the necessary elements of a VAD practitioner within the meaning of the VAD Act 2022, including, but not limited to, proficiency in intravenous cannulation
Conditions of appointment are in accordance with the Health Services Act 1997 and Public Hospitals (Visiting Medical Officers Sessional Contracts) Determination 2014.
Selection Criteria
1. Possess registration with the Medical Board of Australia or equivalent as provided for in the Health Insurance Act 1997. Must have Australian Citizenship or Permanent Australian Residency.
2. Completed mandatory training to be recognised as an authorised voluntary assisted dying practitioner in NSW and have practised in the medical profession for at least 10 years and Evidence of additional qualifications, skills and/or experience required for specific scope of practice for the specialty
3. Sound clinical knowledge in end-of-life care demonstrated through successful clinical practice in an environment appropriate to the requirements of the position and demonstrated good understanding of the NSW Voluntary Assisted Dying Act 2022.
4. Demonstrated clinical ability to carry out the necessary elements of an administering practitioner within the meaning of the VAD Act 2022, including, but not limited to, proficiency in intravenous cannulation
5. Demonstrated skills and attitudes appropriate for practice as a Senior Medical Practitioner including:
· Proven ability to work effectively and harmoniously with medical and other health services colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary health care team.
· Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues.
· Excellent organisational, supervision and collaboration skills with demonstrated ability to build respectful relationships.
· Maintaining and developing knowledge, skills and professional performance to the level required for contemporary practice.
· Experience and involvement in quality assurance activities and translation of research into practice to improve patient safety and quality.
6. Demonstrated aptitude for clinical leadership which is evidenced by:
