About the Opportunity
As an enrolled nurse, supporting midwifery staff in the postnatal ward provides a unique opportunity to deliver compassionate, hands-on care to women as they recover from childbirth. This role involves assisting with monitoring maternal wellbeing, offering guidance with newborn care, and providing reassurance during what can be both an exciting and overwhelming time for families. Working closely with midwives, the enrolled nurse helps ensure that mothers receive safe, evidence-based care while also fostering a nurturing environment that promotes confidence and bonding between parent and child.

In addition to maternal support, the role extends to conducting newborn hearing tests as part of the Statewide Infant Screening–Hearing (SWISH) program. This responsibility is vital, as early detection of hearing loss can significantly improve a child’s long-term communication and developmental outcomes. By performing these screenings and liaising with families and specialist services when follow-up is required, the enrolled nurse contributes to a holistic model of care that safeguards both the immediate and future health of the baby. This dual focus—supporting mothers and protecting infants’ developmental potential—makes the position both rewarding and impactful
