About the role

The Director, Environmental Health Branch brings both technical skills and knowledge in environmental health and strategic experience working across government. The Director leads teams of technical and policy experts in Aboriginal environmental health, risk assessment of environmental hazards, mosquito surveillance, environmental health regulation under the Public Health Act, and ensuring safe drinking and recreational water across NSW.
The Director works with other directors in Health Protection NSW to ensure communicable disease, one health and epidemiological expertise informs and supports the work of the Branch.
The Director also works closely with public health units across NSW to support local environmental health responses and provide expert advice.
The Director holds a strategic role for NSW Health, representing NSW Health in senior interagency and national meetings, and advising the Chief Health Officer and Minister on environmental health matters.
Health Manager level 6, starting salary from $189,878 - $207,381 plus Super, with a 40-hour work week.
What you’ll be doing
- Provide leadership to the managers of the four teams in Environmental Health Branch.
- Ensure Environmental Health teams are resourced to respond to urgent environmental health risks or concerns.
- Provide advice to the Chief Health Officer or Minister on environmental health matters, including responding to Ministerial inquiries, Cabinet requests, and parliamentary questions on notice.
- Respond to media enquiries on environmental health issues.
- Attend senior officer group meetings with other government agencies.
About you
We are seeking motivated and committed individuals who can support the work of NSW Health with:
- Tertiary qualifications in public health, or related field
- Experience in reviewing and responding to health risk assessments for developments or environmental health hazards
- Sound knowledge of applied epidemiology
- Experience and understanding of working across government agencies
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
