What you'll be doing

The Clinical Nurse Consultant (CNC) provides expert clinical advice to patients, carers and other health care professionals within breast disease through the delivery of a specialist consultant service across the five core domains of specialist breast care nursing: collaborative care, coordinated care, supportive care, information provision and education, and clinical leadership. Key responsibilities will be to:

  • Provide expert, high-quality clinical care and consultancy to patients, carers and health professionals in the area of breast cancer, developing, implementing and evaluating care management plans for patients with complex health needs.

  • Monitor, analyse and evaluate the effectiveness of BCI patient care outcomes through continuous improvement strategies and promotion of best practice protocols and guidelines.

  • Initiate, conduct, utilise and disseminate findings of research, participating in and supporting BCI research and education programs through standardised information and evidence-based advice.

  • Provide clinical leadership and act as role model and expert clinician contributing to the development of clinical processes including pathways, policy and procedures from a breast cancer perspective.

  • Contribute to the development, provision and delivery of specialty breast cancer education programs and participate in the strategic and operational planning for breast care clinical services delivery.

Essential Requirements

  • Registration: Current Authority to Practice as a Registered Nurse with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (APHRA) 

 

Selection Criteria

1.     Registered Nurse with at least five years post-registration experience in either surgical or medical oncology, ideally with at least three years' experience as a breast care nurse, or related discipline.

2.     Relevant post graduate qualifications in breast care nursing or cancer nursing (minimum first unit of the postgraduate certificate, with willingness if deemed necessary to complete the postgraduate certificate in breast care nursing). If no formal education in breast care nursing, then an active understanding that they will be encouraged and supported by the McGrath Foundation and their LHD to obtain post-graduate qualifications in breast care studies. This will require the BCN to commence in the role within the McGrath Foundation Associate Pathway.

3.     Holds valid NSW driver's licence and willingness to travel to other WSLHD sites.

4.     Demonstrated expertise in assessment, diagnosis/formulation/management of patients with breast cancer.

5.     Proven clinical leadership capabilities with the ability to provide consultancy advice, education and support to individuals, their families, nursing staff and other health professionals.

6.     Demonstrated ability to work within a multidisciplinary team and an ability to identify and improve opportunities to enhance continuity of care between breast cancer and other health care services.

7.     Demonstrated ability to develop, implement, present and evaluate education, clinical procedures and policies to multidisciplinary teams. Demonstrated competency in written and verbal communication, report writing and research skills.

8.     Demonstrated ability to work autonomously and in a multidisciplinary team with high level time management, problem solving, analytical and organisational skills.
