What you'll be doing
The Bureau of Health Information (BHI) was established by the NSW Government in 2009 to report on the performance of the NSW public healthcare system. BHI’s purpose is to provide the community, healthcare professionals and policy makers with independent, timely and accurate information about the performance of the NSW public health system in ways that enhance the system’s accountability and inform efforts to improve healthcare. Our vision is that BHI is the trusted provider of healthcare performance information, that the information is used and debated to inform decisions, and that healthcare in NSW continues to improve. BHI shares the CORE values of NSW Health – Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment.
 
The Senior Communications Officer develops and implements a range of communications activities, including writing and editing short- and long-form reports and articles, preparing high level correspondence, writing and editing digital content, and some media relations. Reporting to the Lead Communications Officer, the position is pivotal to BHI’s public relations, external and internal communications. BHI’s communications function supports the organisation’s core objectives and enhances its position as a credible source of independent information on the performance of the public health system in NSW.
  1. High-level written, editing and proofing skills, including writing for different communication channels.
  2. Demonstrated ability to translate complex information into plain English for a range of internal and external audiences, including health consumers, media and wider NSW public.
  3. Strong organisational and time management skills, with demonstrated ability to work on a range of ongoing projects and manage competing demands, develop innovative solutions and make sound decisions in order to meet deadlines.
  4. Demonstrated media liaison experience, either as a journalist or working in a communications team. The ability to provide media training and supporting materials.
  5. Working with analysts and technical experts in the production of complex reports and associated materials.
  6. Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain relationships with staff, stakeholders, including the general community, healthcare professional and government groups, and the media, to achieve communication outcomes.
  7. Strong self motivation with demonstrated capacity to work independently and as an effective and productive member of a team.
  8. Tertiary qualifications in health or science, communication, public affairs or journalism, or equivalent experience.
