What you'll be doing

The Aboriginal Mental Health Clinician at BEAT provides specialist mental health interventions for Aboriginal young people aged 12-24. The role focuses on holistic, person-centred care within a multidisciplinary team. Other responsibilities include:

  • Provide assessments, therapy, and care for young people and families.
  • Identify risks, ensure safety, and make appropriate referrals.
  • Collaborate in clinical reviews, intake, and peer support meetings.
  • Advocate for Aboriginal youth experiencing disadvantage.
  • Participate in training, policy development, and quality improvement.

Essential Requirements

Qualification: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing/ Psychology/ Social Work/ Occupational Therapy or relevant degree to be a counsellor
Registration: Full Registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Agency (AHPRA) as a Registered Nurse/ Psychologist/ Occupational Therapist or eligible for membership with the Australian Association of Social Workers (social worker) or eligible for membership with the Psychotherapy and Counselling Federation of Australia (counsellor)

 

Selection Criteria

  1. Be of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander descent authorised under section 14 of the Anti-Discrimination Act (NSW) 1977.
  2. Must have demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal young people with mental illness, concept of social and emotional wellbeing including an understanding of Aboriginal intergenerational trauma. This will include an understanding regarding the practical and emotional issues that may arise when working with Aboriginal individuals with mental health concerns and their families.
  3. Must have completed tertiary education/qualification in Social work, Counselling, Psychology, Occupational Therapy and/or equivalent; and relevant experience working with Aboriginal Young People.
  4. Demonstrated understanding of the principles and application of child protection guidelines within NSW Health and Children and Young Persons (Care and Protection) Act 1998, their actual or potential impact and risk on Aboriginal children, families and communities.
  5. Comprehensive knowledge and experience in working with young people with Alcohol & Other drug difficulties, especially Aboriginal families and communities.
  6. Ability to work both autonomously and as a member of a multidisciplinary team, always working within the scope of registration and role, including ability to prioritise own workload.
  7. Have effective written and verbal communication skills with a demonstrated competency in use of computerised administration systems.
  8. Current and Valid Class C Driver’s license and willingness to drive for work purposes
