What you'll be doing
The Peer Support program is part of an integrated Staff Support Services program within NSW Ambulance that aims to ensure the health and welfare of the workforce. Peer Support aims to provide all staff with a colleague to talk to who can relate to their experiences, provide a listening ear and link them in with professional supports when required.
Peer Support Officers (PSOs) are permanent employees/volunteers who volunteer their time to provide support and assistance to colleagues. PSOs provide confidential, practical, emotional support and assistance to colleagues. This involves providing support to staff around personal and/or work related issues and defusing strong emotional reactions experienced by their colleagues in response to traumatic or critical incidents that have a potential to emotionally affect them.
  1. Experience in dealing with people’s responses and reactions to life stressors (both work and non-work related).
  2. Demonstrated ability to act with a high degree of integrity, and to provide non-judgemental and confidential support.
  3. Demonstrated resilience and self-care practices, and the ability to manage competing time demands and responsibilities.
  4. Knowledge of staff support and community based support services that are available to staff at NSW Ambulance and the ability to undertake initiatives to raise awareness of staff support and increase staff morale.
  5. Demonstrated ability to remain calm and think clearly and logically in stressful situations.
  6. Demonstrated strong verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to liaise with all levels of management and other support services as required.
  7. Good understanding of the core business of NSW Ambulance, and is well respected within the organisation and among their peers.
