What you'll be doing
Chaplains provide confidential pastoral care, spiritual guidance and wellbeing support to NSW Ambulance staff, and their families, as well as to patients and bystanders in the event of traumatic or stressful incidents, or in relation to personal issues affecting staff. This may take place at the site of an incident, at a hospital, a person’s home or in the workplace.
Chaplains may help employees, patients, and bystanders to access other faith based pastoral care or welfare services in the wider community should that be requested. Chaplains also provide representation at baptisms, weddings, funerals, and other ceremonies or religious services where a Chaplain may be required or requested.
  1. Relevant qualifications and experience in either chaplaincy, pastoral care, theological qualifications, social work, (Certificate IV Pastoral Care) or relevant tertiary qualifications + 40 hrs of Clinical Pastoral Experience (CPE) through a recognised provider where qualifications are not chaplain specific.
  2. Experience in dealing with stressful, critical, or traumatic incidents, and in providing support to people who have experienced traumatic events or health emergencies. Demonstrated ability to act with a high degree of integrity, and to provide non-judgemental and confidential support.
  3. Ability to think clearly and logically, and to remain calm in stressful situations.
  4. Excellent verbal communication and interpersonal skills.
  5. Ability to work in a multi-denominational, multi-faith team, and to work individually with minimal supervision.
  6. Chaplains should be aware that they are required to facilitate spiritual wellbeing to those with specific religious associations and to those without. Therefore, they will need to have a well-rounded world view of spirituality and religion to effectively operate in this area.
  7. Demonstrated resilience and self-care practices, and the ability to manage competing demands and responsibilities.
