The Occupational Therapist (OT) works collaboratively as part of the Occupational Therapy team and the wider Child, Youth and Family team providing assessment and intervention for children aged from birth to those attending school.
The OT holds a high level of expertise and comprehensive practice skills in infant and child development and works in partnership with families and children to develop, implement and evaluate effective recommendations and care plans for children from diverse backgrounds, including vulnerable families. The role works in partnership with parent/carers, assisting them to understand their children’s movement-based skills, sensory processing, play and self-care skills which supports their lifetime development, learning potential and social participation outcomes.
The role also facilitates and supports families to access other health services and ensures safe clinical handover. They also apply effective interpersonal communication skills to actively contribute to interdisciplinary team case reviews and children’s care coordination meetings/ conferences. They provide clinical education and supervision for students.
The Occupational Therapy Team is part of the Northern Sydney Local Health District (NSLHD) Child, Youth and Family (CYF) Community Health Service. The overall service philosophy of care revolves around working in partnership with families, providing child-centred, safe, culturally sensitive, trauma and evidence-informed, neurodiversity affirming and integrated care that optimises lifelong health, development, learning, wellbeing and social participation outcomes for children and families.

- Consistently demonstrates behaviours that reinforce the CORE Values of our organisation; Collaboration, Openness, Respect and Empowerment. Demonstrates these behaviours with all stakeholders; colleagues, direct reports, as well as our patients and consumers, and those that care for them
- Must hold registration with the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia.
- Recognised specialist paediatric OT clinical expertise, skill and knowledge and extensive experience working with children with developmental concerns.
- Demonstrated ability to work autonomously applying professional judgement to conduct paediatric occupational therapy assessments, plan, implement and evaluate interventions for children presenting with a range of health and developmental needs, including the impact of trauma.
- Demonstrated ability to work in partnership with families and provide trauma-informed care for children from vulnerable families and priority population groups. Ability to engage effectively with families and service providers to provide information, guidance and education about children’s needs to promote optimal child development.
- Demonstrated excellent written communication, interpersonal, negotiation and verbal communication skills with ability to work collaboratively as part of an interdisciplinary team and capacity to establish effective service provider relationships to support a coordinated care experience for children.
- Proven problem-solving, critical thinking and organisational skills with ability to independently prioritise and organise own work/caseload. Demonstrated commitment to evidence-based practice, evidence of quality improvement and service evaluation skills and experience. Understanding of population health concepts.
- Demonstrated computer literacy and ability to use health information, telehealth and Microsoft systems. Hold a current unrestricted NSW driver’s licence (P2 licence acceptable) and willingness to travel to community health centres for work within the scope of the role.
