Are you seeking a rewarding laboratory role in a regional town that is well connected and close to major cities? Then look no further! We are seeking a Technical Assistant to join our Microbiology laboratory team in a part-time temporary position at NSW Health Pathology, Orange Hospital.

Just 3.5 hrs away from Sydney (and less than an hour by air), Orange is a thriving town famed for its award winning restaurants, natural beauty and wineries. In addition to several daily flights to and from Sydney, there are direct flights to Melbourne and Brisbane from Orange Regional Airport several times a week. Orange hosts several high quality educational facilities for all ages from primary school right through to TAFE and University. Orange Hospital is one of the largest regional hospitals in NSW, is affiliated with University of Sydney and also hosts students from Charles Sturt University, University of Newcastle and University of Wollongong.

The NSW Health Pathology Service at Orange is a Category GY service located within Orange Hospital's Bloomfield campus. The laboratory works directly with the Category GX laboratories at Nepean and Westmead Hospitals and also works closely with the other NSW Health Pathology services in the region.

What you'll be doing

Technical Assistants perform a range of Microbiology laboratory support and specimen reception services, and provide assistance to scientific laboratory staff, under supervision, to deliver a patient-focused high-quality Pathology service. Duties include computer data entry, processing infectious human pathology specimens for microscopy, culture and molecular tests, assisting with kit-based and automated testing processes, preparing and maintaining bacterial cultures, assisting with inventory of reagents and supplies, performing and documenting quality control, safe operation of laboratory equipment, performing routine equipment maintenance, and customer service tasks.

  1. Previous experience in a pathology or laboratory setting, including a working knowledge of, or demonstrated ability to learn, all aspects of the laboratory environment relevant to the Department
  2. Demonstrated ability to manage tasks in a demanding environment where there are competing priorities and time constraints.
  3. Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers, internal and external.
  4. Demonstrated problem solving and analytical skills combined with the ability to investigate and resolve general issues.
  5. Willingness to operate and maintain pre analytical equipment as required.
  6. Proficient computer skills including high attention to detail and data accuracy.
  7. Demonstrated understanding of confidentiality and proper handling of sensitive information in a laboratory setting, following relevant legislation, policies, and requirements.
  8. Willingness to participate in a 24/7 rotating shift roster, including weekends, public holidays, and night shifts, and the ability to travel to any site or location within the operational area as required.
