The Northern NSW Rotational Anaesthesia Training Scheme is highly motivated and committed to teaching and training, running in-house exam preparation courses as well as weekly clinical teaching sessions and practical workshops.
Where you'll be working
The John Hunter Hospital/Northern NSW Rotational Anaesthesia Training Scheme is a large scheme covering a huge area of northern NSW. We have 34 Registrars and 8 Provisional Fellows. Our case-mix is diverse, high acuity and challenging commensurate with a tertiary referral centre. We are one of the biggest trauma centres in NSW. We also serve a large indigenous population and a growing migrant population. Given the huge area served, there are specific geographical and delayed presentation challenges.
What you'll be doing
This will be done under supervision, appropriate to the level of training of the applicant, and in line with recommendations of the training program of the Australian and New Zealand College of Anaesthetists (ANZCA) or as part of the CICM or ACEM training programme or Diploma of Rural Generalist Anaesthesia, where this is applicable.
Trainees are expected to extend their knowledge and skills in managing anaesthesia across multiple subspeciality areas of anaesthesia in order to meet the professional standards set by ANZCA. They are required to deliver anaesthesia, perioperative care and pain management services inside and outside the operating rooms and to perform other duties during rotations to other areas as directed. Trainees will participate as a multidisciplinary team member across key areas of anaesthetics including:
- anaesthesia and sedation (including obstetric anaesthesia where relevant)
- regional anaesthesia
- airway management
- pain medicine
- perioperative medicine
- resuscitation
- trauma and crisis management
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Have successfully completed at least two years of graduate medical training and at least one year a critical care rotation, with at least one term of experience in anaesthesia.
- Demonstrate commitment to learning how to be an anaesthetist, including researching the requirements of anaesthetic training and preparing for work as an anaesthetic trainee.
- Demonstrate a commitment to training and working in the Hunter New England region and an awareness of the challenges faced in delivering excellent healthcare for patients in this region.
- Demonstrate evidence of being an effective collaborator, working with colleagues to deliver excellent care to patients and their families.
- Demonstrate skill in managing differences, resolving conflict and dealing with sensitive issues to continue to make safe decisions even when there is a difference of opinion.
- Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively with patients, families, professionals and the general public in both oral and written formats.
- Demonstrate commitment to patients, the profession, colleagues and yourself and the family through professional conduct, excellent organisational ability and effective time management skills.
