What you'll be doing
During 3 years of Basic Training, the PPBT will:
- Experience working in diverse medical specialties with a broad focus in Paediatrics & Child Health
- Complete training rotations as part of requirements for network training within a range of hospitals and health services - Perform procedures under supervision appropriate for level of training
- Undertake duties at multiple approved training locations
- Become clinically proficient in the care of children
- Build on skills gained during undergraduate medical studies to develop the professional qualities, attitudes and behaviours needed to become a competent and mature physician
- Complete work-based assessments to monitor progress and provide feedback on training goals
The PPBT is a member of Junior Medical Staff within a clinical team. In matters relating directly to patient care, the PPBT is responsible to the Specialist in charge of the patients’ care. PPBTs are responsible for supervision and teaching of other members of the clinical team. PPBTs are role models for more junior team members with regards to professional conduct, clinical decision making and communication with patients, parents, health professionals and staff within hospitals, and assist with liasing with health professionals and other stakeholders in the community. PPBTs are appointed to one of the NSW Paediatric Training Networks (Western, Northern or Eastern), each of which is made up of a number of health facilities. As these are network training positions, these roles involve training at a variety of locations and clinical departments. In order to comply with Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) training program requirements, PPBTs are required to work at peripheral accredited sites (which may include private hospitals). Refer to attached documents for sites listed as being within the network. These facilities may be outside of NSW.
PPBTs will be required to work normal hours as appropriate for the particular clinical service allocated; this may include shift work. PPBTs will also be required to work reasonable rostered overtime hours as required by the clinical service; this includes being available for patient handover and on-call duties in accordance with the Award. PPBTs who accept these network positions must comply with the requirements of the training positions they are allocated to across the network, as outlined by the local statement of duties. The aims of the Networked Training Program are to ensure that the delivery of paediatric care and training in NSW is of the highest quality, sustainable, flexible, transparent and in accordance with RACP training requirements and clinical service needs. Paediatric Training positions are conditional upon the ongoing satisfactory performance of the Trainee, and compliance with requirements relevant to the training program, including progression through the training program at the expected rate.
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
- Minimum 2 years postgraduate experience. Eligible for registration with RACP and less than 12 months RACP paediatric training at commencement of contract.
- Ongoing commitment to further education and professional development. This includes demonstrated ability to teach and willingness to participate in the teaching of Medical Students, Junior Medical Staff and other clinical staff. Please provide an example.
- Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to ensure the appropriate management of the patient. Please provide an example.
- Demonstrated experience in taking comprehensive patient histories, performing clinical examinations and accurately documenting in patient records. Please provide an example.
- Ability to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment. Please provide an example.
- Ability to demonstrate accurate decision-making, to seek further advice in accordance with level of experience and to show an awareness of limitations. Please provide an example.
- Proven ability to organise, plan and manage competing tasks. Please provide an example.
